3 January 2025 – We will start posting new updates for Hurricane Milton Recovery instead of adding to the original post from October. The Captain’s office renovation has been completed and new adjustable shelving and work-space has been installed. The Captain’s office is critical for normal Beach Ferry operations. The U.S. Coast Guard requires much paperwork to be completed and retained, as well as making Captains’ licenses and other records available for inspection onsite. The office is also a place for Captains to eat lunch and rest throughout the long hot days. This space also contains the Beach Ferry battery chargers and the main electrical panel for the Ferry Dock House. It is critical and now has been restored with the help of knowledgeable and capable volunteers and contractors.
The Ferry Dock House storage room has been repainted and new waterproof storage shelving has been installed. This space is used to store items necessary for operating and maintaining the Beach Ferry. Captains Eric and Phil completed this work. In order to keep them retained and ready to go when normal Ferry operations begin, the Trust has been using them to perform hurricane recovery efforts.
The digital Ferry pass system is now an integral part of normal Ferry operations. The system has eliminated pass counterfeiting and has ensured property owners and residents, as well as their guests, are the only users of the Ferry. The Trust is ordering a new pass reader, since the existing one was underwater. Also, we know how useful the Beach live stream is with members. We are working to restore that service as well.
Due to the holidays and the continued recovery efforts over a wide area, the restoration of the low-water dock has been a challenge. The dock debris was removed several weeks ago. We believe we will have more information next week on the marine contractor schedule for repair.
We are making steady progress and continue to work on our ability to conduct business. We will likely have more information next week on when we will be able to conduct business. The Trust has voted on keeping Boat Ramp and Kayak launch area access fees the same for 2025. The Beach Ferry cost for 2025 is still to be determined based on ongoing expenses and hurricane recovery costs. The Trust is committed to keep costs as low as possible.
Thanks to all for your patience and support!
